Different People

For Natalie

One more letter from you
That ends, "why don't you write me? I'm longing for you"
But what I'd have to say can't be written
Cause I'd have to see what you'd do

Would you cry if I wrote
"I don't really miss you the way that I thought
"I get on well without you
"But that's just because of how much I love you"

It is not a physical need to have and to hold you
This is bigger a thing than I ever have told you
It's so great a love that the distance don't matter
But tell me: how am I supposed to write that in a letter?

I hope you're feeling the same
I hope that I didn't say all this in vain
So don't let the light at the end of the tunnel
Be the front of an oncoming train

When one day you'll return
I'm sure that what loneliness is I'll have learned
An we'll be different people
And our love will like a bonfire burn

But till then it's not a physical need to have and to hold you
This is bigger a thing than I ever have told you
It's so great a love that the distance don't matter
But tell me: how am I supposed to write that in a letter?

Don't ask me when this was. Sometime in the early '90s. I'll say summer of '92 if I'm pressed.
